Smithland Locks and Dam

Illinois, Pope County

river mile 919

919 IL Pope Smithland Locks and Dam sign 600 8 high.jpg

Unlike many other USACE sites along the Ohio River, this locks and dam is closed to the public. There is no access to or from the river here. The property is marked “Authorized Personnel Only,” and, later down the long wide road, “Restricted Access.” It is many miles from a town with any services, 19 miles upriver to Golconda and 22 miles downriver to Metropolis. In a pinch it might be possible to primitive camp in the adjacent IDNR Dog Island Wildlife Management Area.
