Belpre Civitan Park

Ohio, Washington County, Belpre

river mile 186

River access: yes. Tree cover: somewhat covered. Impervious surface: some. Landscape design strategy: manicured. Information about the Ohio River: little to none.

The research team approached this park from the wrong direction. We were driving downstream along the river, looking for parks along the bank. Immediately we saw one — the usual riverbank, trees, graveled and muddy parking area, and boat launch. A typical simple boat launch park. We should have looked to the right, up to the top of the bluff. There is what looks like a jewel of a small town park. It is sponsored by one of those internationally important local civic groups and service clubs, Civitan International. Google Earth shows it having six baseball diamonds, a dirt track, a long paved jogging path, tennis courts, and a swimming pool. And, in fact, there is a far more elaborate boat launch just a few hundred yards downstream as well. The trees and shrubs are beautifully manicured. It appears to be well used. Unfortunately, due to our neglect the research team did not explore all its amenities. We should have! It looks like a park citizens should be proud of!
